ABOUT THIS CARE

Look after the support around your teeth.

Gum problems can be easy to overlook when there is little pain. An examination helps establish whether you have inflammation limited to the gums or a condition affecting the tissues that support your teeth.

Signs worth checking

  • Bleeding during brushing or cleaning between teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Receding gums or teeth that feel loose
01

Gingivitis and periodontitis need different care

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums and can improve with effective cleaning and dental care. Periodontitis affects the tissues and bone supporting teeth. It needs professional management and ongoing maintenance; cleaning alone cannot simply replace support that has been lost.

02

What a gum assessment involves

Dr Tadic examines your teeth and gums and may recommend X-rays. Tell her about bleeding, changes you have noticed, previous gum treatment, medicines, smoking and diabetes. These details help inform the assessment and care plan.

03

Treatment at the practice and care at home

Care may include removing plaque and hardened deposits, cleaning below the gumline where needed and showing you how to clean the areas that are difficult to reach. A routine clean and treatment for more advanced gum disease are not necessarily the same appointment.

04

Keep track of how your gums respond

Follow-up checks help establish whether the care is working and what maintenance you need. Persistent or advanced disease may require a periodontist’s assessment. The plan should explain the aims and limitations, including whether particular teeth may be difficult to keep.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Your questions,
answered.

Read the answers below, then bring any questions about your own teeth to your visit.

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?

Continue gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush and arrange a dental assessment. Your dentist can help you clean effectively around sore areas and between the teeth.

Is a standard clean enough?

That depends on the findings. Early inflammation and more advanced periodontal disease need different levels of care. Deeper cleaning or referral may be recommended if the supporting tissues are affected.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis can be reversed. Periodontitis requires ongoing control and maintenance; treatment does not guarantee that lost bone support will return or that every tooth can be kept.

When should I call rather than book online?

Call for very sore or swollen gums or teeth that are becoming loose, so your concern can be discussed promptly. Online booking lets you reserve an available appointment, but is not an urgent-response service.
