Rinse with warm salt water, take your usual pain relief as directed on the pack, and avoid very hot, cold or sweet food. Pain that keeps you awake or lasts more than a day needs to be looked at.
Rinse gently, keep any fragment in milk or sterile saline in a clean container, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax if it’s cutting your tongue or cheek.
For an adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root, and don’t scrub it. If you can, gently put it back in its socket; otherwise keep it moist in milk or in a clean container with saliva, not water, and call immediately. The sooner it’s back in, the better its chances. Baby teeth aren’t put back, but still call.
Keep the crown if it has come off whole. Don’t try to glue it back. Chew on the other side and keep the tooth clean. Temporary dental cement from the chemist can cover it until you’re seen.
Don’t press on it and don’t apply heat. A cold pack on the outside of the face helps. Swelling that spreads towards the eye or down the neck, or any difficulty swallowing or breathing, is a hospital emergency.
Warm salt water rinses, keep the area as clean as you can, and pain relief as directed. A bad taste, swelling or trouble opening your mouth suggests infection and should be checked.
Apply firm pressure with clean gauze and contact the treating dentist for advice. Heavy bleeding or bleeding that will not stop needs urgent medical care. If breathing is affected, call 000.
Check for loose or moved teeth and cuts to the lips and gums. If you were knocked out, feel dizzy or have been vomiting, or your jaw may be broken, go to the emergency department first, then call me about the teeth.
General guidance: Healthdirect dental injuries. Call us for advice about your situation.
For a serious medical emergency, call 000. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious facial injury needs hospital care first.
Choose the care you want to read about. If you are unsure what you need, start with a general appointment.

Dr Tadic combines 26 years in private practice with a personal approach to everyday, restorative and emergency dentistry. At Brighter Smiles Centre, you see Dr Tadic for your care and can talk directly about what has changed, what worries you and what you want to understand before treatment.
Her work extends beyond the practice through monthly Clinical Chats discussions with dental colleagues around the world. At your own appointment, the focus is on your teeth: understanding the findings, comparing suitable care and knowing the costs before you decide. If you feel anxious or have been away from dental care, tell us when you book.
There is time to explain what has brought you in, ask questions and discuss what happens next.

Reserve an available time online. For pain, swelling or a broken tooth, call first so we can arrange the right visit.
Discuss your concerns, then have your teeth and gums assessed. Bring your medicines list and details of previous dental care.
Your assessment has its own fee. Dr Tadic explains treatment options, alternatives and costs before you agree to care.
Bring your health fund card and claim on the spot with HICAPS.
