ABOUT THIS CARE

A crown protects a tooth. A bridge replaces one.

A crown fits over an existing tooth that has been prepared for it. A bridge fills a gap with a fixed replacement, commonly supported by the teeth beside it. The condition of those teeth and gums is central to choosing a suitable design.

What brings people in

  • A cracked, broken or heavily filled tooth
  • A missing tooth or a gap you want assessed
  • A crown or bridge that is loose, worn or damaged
  • Restoring a tooth while considering your bite and appearance
01

Check the foundations first

Dr Tadic assesses the remaining tooth structure, existing restorations and gum support. Decay or gum disease may need attention before a crown or bridge is planned. For a missing tooth, alternatives may include a removable denture or an implant assessment; the right choice depends on your mouth.

02

Understand the appointments involved

Crowns and many bridges require existing teeth to be reshaped. Records are taken so the restoration can be made, with a temporary restoration sometimes used between appointments. Treatment commonly involves more than one visit. Your plan should make the stages, timing and costs clear.

03

Think beyond the fitting appointment

A crown or bridge still needs daily cleaning and dental checks. Supporting teeth can develop decay, and restorations can chip, loosen or need replacement. Cleaning underneath a bridge is part of its ongoing care. Tooth preparation can also cause sensitivity or lead to further treatment.

Discuss the materials, the care you will need at home and the outlook for the supporting teeth. There is no guaranteed lifespan for a crown or bridge.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Your questions,
answered.

Read the answers below, then bring any questions about your own teeth to your visit.

Do I need a crown or could the tooth be filled?

That depends on how much healthy tooth remains, the damage and the load on the tooth. Dr Tadic can explain why a crown or another restoration is being considered after examining it.

Is a bridge removable?

A conventional dental bridge is fixed in place. It differs from a removable denture. The supporting teeth and the space being restored determine whether a bridge is suitable.

What if my crown comes off?

Keep the crown and call the practice. Do not try to glue it back yourself. Dr Tadic needs to assess both the restoration and the tooth beneath it.

Will my crown or bridge last forever?

No restoration has a guaranteed lifespan. Daily cleaning, your bite, the supporting teeth and regular reviews all matter. Future repair or replacement may be needed.

Can I get a quote before proceeding?

Yes. The proposed design, materials and any work needed first affect the estimate. Discuss an itemised plan and check your health fund benefit before deciding.
